Pu'uhonua o Honaunau NHP, Big Island, Hawai'i
This National Historical Park preserves aspects of traditional Hawai'ian life. Pu'uhonua means place of refuge. Defeated warriors, lawbreakers, and others could seek refuge and thus, escape punishment if they made it safely on land. Which wasn't easy because of the rugged lava coast and the warriors protecting the pu'uhonua.
